Space Heaters: Importance & Warranty
Question: What is the importance of a space heater and what affect does it have on warranty?
Answer: Electric motors frequently have space heaters installed, at the customers request, to prevent moisture condensation in the motor when it is not running. In applications where the possibility of condensation is not a factor, or where continuous operation of the motor prevents the formation of condensation, space heaters are not necessary.
U.S. Electrical Motors warranty policy covers manufacturing defects, and allows for repair or replacement to remedy any situations which may arise within the warrantable period. The failure of a motor due to condensation does not fall into this category, and is therefore not considered for warranty coverage. If the project plans and specifications do not require space heaters, then the space heaters present in the unit may be left unconnected and the space heater warranty nameplate may be removed. However, as previously stated, motor failure due to condensation is not warrantable.
